About the event

Purpose of the seminar

This FARIAtalks seminar aims to provide insights and good practices for Finland-based researchers hoping to start collaboration with partners in the United States.

Cooperation with partners from the United States can include some unexpected challenges arising from different expectations, policies, and laws. These include, for example, different norms in Intellectual Property Rights, budgeting, application systems, contracts and other legal frameworks, and management of data and privacy. These are not unsurmountable issues and are more easily dealt with if a shared understanding is established at the beginning of cooperation.

What are these key issues and what should you ask in order to start discussion around these? Dr Jani Haapakoski and Dr Henna Moore, both research specialists working on Finland – U.S. cooperation will outline 5 questions researchers should ask before starting cooperation with U.S. partners.

Please note, this webinar will not be recorded.

Jani Haapakoski is Research Funding Specialist at the University of Oulu. He is specializing in developing the Finland-U.S. cooperation in research funding at the University of Oulu and will be chairing the FinnARMA’s US-Network from 2023 onwards.

Henna Moore is Research Funding Specialist at the University of Helsinki. Her focus is on international research funding, especially EU and US funding.

Target group: Finland-based researchers, research managers, and other HEI    actors interested in cooperating with partners in the U.S.

Background:

The Finnish-American Research & Innovation Accelerator (FARIA) is a strategic US-focused platform, which integrates, aligns and supports joint & associated actions of Finnish member institutions.

  1. It creates visibility for Finnish RDI-excellence and simplifies contact facilitation between Finland and key-regions in the US.
  2. It serves as launch pad for concrete RDI-projects from ideation over funding generation to implementation.
  3. It supports an alignment of Finnish US-engagement activities

To date there are 12 Finnish universities and 4 universities of applied sciences organized in FARIA. We represent 89 % of the national RDI-power within the higher education sector.
