FARIA INCUBATOR
Supporting joint Fin-US Research Collaboration
The Academy of Finland has recently established yearly joint calls with both the NSF and the NIH, for which only Finnish-US research collaborations are eligible. In response launches the Finnish-American Research & Innovation Accelerator in collaboration with the Academy of Finland a light-weight matching and preparatory program for US and Finnish researchers – the FARIAincubator.

PROGRAM DESIGN
The FARIAincubator is a program that creates joint project teams and prepares them to apply for funding. The preparation is conducted via a series of four online seminars which aim to share up to date information of the joint Finnish-US calls and coaching by experienced grant writers.
Participation is free of cost.
Added value for participating researchers:
Reach new potential collaborators specific to your field of interest
Qualify for joint Academy of Finland/NIH/NSF funding by partnering
Stay up to date on funding criteria and application processes
Increase the quality of your proposal and thereby success chances for funding
Target group/areas:
We operate in areas where Finland’s scientific expertise is globally leading and nationally supported by well-established cross-institutional excellence clusters. Thus, eligible for participation are project ideas around AI, Wireless Technology 5 & 6G, Social support systems and education interventions, and Bioeconomy (for NIH with relevance to health questions/ for NSF only AI and 5G/6G). In each category max 5 project ideas. Preference will be given to collaborations with partners from FARIA target regions to support the ongoing state-level collaboration frameworks with Finland (California, Colorado, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Texas, Washington).
Application & matching process:
1. Call for participation on Finnish side:
Finnish researchers submit a draft research/project idea and description of the kind of collaborator expertise they are looking for until March 14th.
Fill in the "idea one-pager" and send until March 14th to jerome.rickmann [at] aalto.fi.
2. Pre-selection:
FARIA makes a preselection and asks partners and co-organizers to share the selected proposals amongst relevant researchers at their institution. Interested US peers get in touch with FARIA, and we connect them with Finnish colleagues and invite them to match making seminar.
Alternatively, already existing Fin-US tandems of researchers can jointly apply for participation by indicating pre-existing collaboration on the "idea one-pager".
The program is structured as follows:
Step 1 Researcher matching seminar: April
Step 2 Academy of Finland Seminar: Joint calls with NSF and NIH: April 28th
Step 3 Grant writing workshop: May or June
Step 4 Joint proposal development/refinement: May-August
Step 5 Academy of Finland Seminar: Updates on imminent calls: August**
Step 6 Submission of proposals: Fall 2022**
Collaborating US Universities:
Stanford University
University of Colorado
University of Maine
University of Michigan
University of Minnesota
Others pending still final approval.
** Exact dates to be confirmed, depends on the Academy’s budget situation and the timing of the next joint calls.
